TODAY THE WORDS ARE SELF RISING FLOUR

TODAY THE WORDS are SELF RISING FLOUR. As our Mother would say, “What in the world?” to this topic. I would normally agree with her thinking as this does not seem like a life lesson topic. I got up early to put on a chuck roast for lunch and I was pulling out the flour to brown the roast. I noticed the self rising flour bag on the carousel and here we go, “self rising” flour lesson.
In the 19rh century with the industrial era, steam mills allowed additives to be added and wallah, self rising flour. It saved time and allowed a diversified product. No longer would a cook or chef have to add baking powder and soda for recipes. Plain flour gave the option to use without those ingredients for dusting or recipes not requiring the flour to rise. I am one of those cooks that love both and use them for different purposes. That brings me to why I am writing about self rising flour. I have seen the “plain” flour people and the “self rising” flour people and I have witnessed the differences. Plain flour people have a different personality than the self rising bunch. They seem content to wait until people add things to their lives (by others having to do for them) and they are not innovated to accomplish “big” things on their own. I see the “self rising” people jump to “rise” on their own and they don’t wait for anyone and/or anything. A friend of mine, whose husband seemed to be the “plain” flour kind of guy, learned early in their marriage he had to have the “active” ingredients for rising added. She practiced hard love and added those ingredients by insisting he rise to the responsibilities of their marriage. She didn’t throw him out, she added to his existing ingredients. This man is one of the finest men I have met and they have a great relationship. Now for the deeper thought, when we find a plain flour person, we don’t need to say this is okay for you to stay this way, add the ingredients (responsibility) and watch them rise. I am not saying that everyone we meet will allow the ingredients to be added but if we try to encourage, expect, and in some manner of tough love, accept no less; more people might become the most they can be. Life becomes easier when we are surrounded by people who are self rising on their own, but God wants us to love, teach and add what we can by witnessing to others. Parents take time to add the active ingredients to help your children rise to be their best!
